We're Still Doing This in 2026!

It's the 17th year of this annual list where I list all my anticipated films of the year. Quick update, for the time being I am now in Sweden for my Masters' degree. It has nothing to do with movies, but being here has made me closer to movies. I volunteered in both Uppsala Short Film Festival and Stockholm Film Festival, and got to watch bunch of movies in the process for free. I'm also still writing for Collider, where my articles lately received heated comments (I'm only doing my job, guys!).

In 2025, I watched 63 movies in the cinema, which includes 13 movies I watched for free during Stockholm Film Festival. I also rewatched some re-releases in the cinemas, like Avatar: The Way of Water, Interstellar (twice in IMAX), and all three Lord of the Rings for a day-long marathon. That's a good year of watching movies for me, and a considerable increase from last year where I saw 38 movies in the cinema. However, from the 50 movies I listed on last year's list, I didn't see 15 of them (two of them are delayed to this year).

Cinema tickets are way more expensive here in Sweden. In other countries, it's usually like 10 Euros but here it's usually around 18 Euros for a regular ticket. Thankfully there are also indie cinemas where tickets are cheaper and they play more arthouse films. So, I hope I can still watch lots of films in the cinemas this year.

Without further ado, here's the list for 2026! As usual, bolded titles are must watches in the cinemas for me. There are several exciting films that the marketing materials I have yet to see, so I can't really judge whether they're cinema-worthy or not.

2025 Anno Filmo

Hello, I've been doing this for 16 years, listing my anticipated movies of the year. It's now more of a ritual than anything. No one's viewing this but me and like 15 other random visitors (yes, that's you!). Last year I mentioned that I wanted to start creating content on TikTok. That lasted for three months. But I'm still writing for Collider, please do give my page a look! It's a thankless job but I'm enjoying writing about some of my favorites. It's kind of a tricky job too, because the clickbait titles listing "worst movies" often thrived but I just felt negative writing them. So I'm only focusing on things I like and positive articles. Also, if you're on Letterboxd, you can also find me there.

It's already February 2025, and last month I only saw one movie, Wolf Man. I was excited for that movie because of Leigh Whannell and Julia Garner, but I was thoroughly disappointed. It's extra disappointing because that's the first movie that I saw in cinemas since late November when I saw Megalopolis. I wanted to watch Companion, but it was released during a busy holiday with like 10 other movies so it disappeared quite fast from the cinemas.

I'm much more mindful of what I watch in the cinemas these days. You can thank the pandemic for this. Last year I only saw 38 movies in the cinemas. Compare that with 2019 when I watched 78 movies in theatres. I'll still watch those movies, but probably when they hit streaming.

Anyway, let's get into it. These are my watchlist for 2025! Bolded titles are must-watches for me. There are two movies marked *, because their release dates are unconfirmed and I guesstimated.

Watchlist 2024

It's that time of the year. I feel anxious if I haven't created this list. For the uninitiated, I have been making this list (mostly for myself—last year's post had 8 views lol who took their time to open a random movie blog) for a full 15 years now. Used to have this on Facebook then I moved it here and I haven't found a new place for this. Also this felt like a good habit to track movies I wanted to watch within the year.

Life update: none, really. But I started writing on Collider! If you see this, please do check out some of my articles. I've been wanting to start creating content on TikTok, so stay tuned next year for updates on this.

So it's the end of January and so far I have seen solid movies in cinemas. Saw Anyone But You (hot people, fun movie), Monster (speechless!), The Beekeeper (protect the hive!), and Anatomy of a Fall (no notes!). January isn't supposed to be this fun.

Without any further ado, here's the list! (*Bold = must watch for me)

JANUARY

OCTOBER

DECEMBER

Nosferatu Bill Skarsgard, Lily Rose-Depp, Robert Eggers (director)

Karate Kid Ralph Macchio, Jackie Chan

Mufasa: The Lion King Barry Jenkins (director)

Hmm after seeing this list, there's not many big movies. There are even no MCU movies, Deadpool 3 somehow doesn't count. The other big movies are movies that I'd watch but I wouldn't go on first weekend, like Joker 2. My opinion might change after I see a trailer. There are also big franchises that opted to release their animated movies, like LOTR and Transformers. Might do big bucks, but I'm not trained to see animated movie spinoffs on the big screen.

I guess here's my top 10 most anticipated films of 2024:

10. Mickey 17, if it gets released this year, would be top 5

9. The Fall Guy - trailer looks great

8. Deadpool 3 - curious!

7. Civil War - trailer looks great

6. Ballerina - Ana De Armas!

5. Rebel Moon - the Snyder Cut version

4. Alien: Romulus - intrigued!

3. Gladiator 2 - curious!

2. Furiosa

*The* List in 2023

Hey! I checked my last year's post and I said that I needed a new hobby. I randomly mentioned knitting. Guess what? I do have a new hobby and it's a bit similar to knitting. I've started embroidery since December. So at least my subconscious is working!

The pandemic has changed my lifestyle I guess. Based on my Letterboxd, I only logged 213 movies in 2022—a stark difference from 341 in 2021. That number is even lower than pre-pandemic year in 2019 when I logged 230 movies. So I think these days I am picky when it comes to movies. If it's boring and pretentious I probably won't watch it. If it does not beg me to watch in cinemas, I won't bother going and I'll wait until it hits streaming. And coming back to my new hobby, these days I'd rather be embroidering stuff than binging a new dumb series on Netflix.

Anyway, it's hard to break a habit isn't it? Especially if it's about a stupid list that I've been making annually since—check notes—2009! Since this list is coming a bit late, I have to report that my moviegoing adventure kicked off with a bang this year. I watched only crazy, abundant movies (up until Ant-Man 3—superhero films are like social obligation these days), starting from M3GAN, Bollywood spectacle Pathaan, Babylon, the Titanic rerelease, to one of the best sci-fi films ever, The Wandering Earth II. The Same Ol' List for 2022

I really would like to find another hobby. Maybe I should start knitting. Thanks to work, I am now listening to audiobooks more and as a result also reading more books! I'm glad that I can honestly say that my hobby is reading. But for now, this is all about my most time-consuming hobby which is movies. According to my Letterboxd, I spent over 4,600 hours of my 2021 watching movies. That number is higher if you count me watching TV shows. Speaking of shows, my first 2022 favorite is Single's Inferno, but that's for another time.

For this post, it's the usual 2022 watchlist. Worth noting every year that I've been doing this since 2009. I didn't even see one of the movies I listed on my top 10 last year because of the Delta wave lockdown. Might be looking at an Omicron wave lockdown soon (as of this writing). Also worth noting that I've reached a certain maturity where I do not need to see every major movie, thanks to Covid. Three years ago I'd be like 'opening day or die' but now it's more like, 'dying isn't that bad tbh'. That made the list has much fewer movies.

Spoiler alert: I'd rather watch a generic Liam Neeson actioner than another Ryan Reynolds Netflix movie, which is why it's not listed. Most of the superhero movies are also not on my top 10 anticipated list because DC has no direction and I might have reached saturation with Marvel thanks to their mediocre Disney+ shows. I'd still watch them, but not in a hurry.

JANUARY

Scream Neve Campbell, Melissa Barrera, Matt Betinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett (director)

The Tender Bar Tye Sheridan, Ben Affleck, George Clooney (director)

The 355 Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Simon Kinberg (director)
